Herd and Harvest Farm: Cultivating Beauty, Creativity and Community in Kapunda

From the beautiful landscape of Kapunda, Herd and Harvest Farm is a growing rural business built on creativity, connection to the land and a passion for beautiful, thoughtfully made products.

Owned and operated by Sarah Espagne, alongside her husband, the farm represents an exciting new chapter as the couple formalise and expand a business they’ve been carefully nurturing together.

At the heart of Herd and Harvest Farm are seasonal blooms, with a particular love for dahlias. Grown directly on the farm, these vibrant flowers are available as fresh bunches for the local community, with visitors also invited to experience the joy of picking their own blooms. In an exciting milestone for the business, Sarah is preparing to launch dahlia tuber sales for the first time, allowing customers to grow a piece of Herd and Harvest Farm in their own gardens.

Beyond flowers, the farm has blossomed into a multi-faceted creative venture. Sarah hand-pours soy candles, reed diffusers and room sprays, each inspired by the natural scents found across the property, from botanicals and orchard notes to the veggie garden and seasonal blooms. These products reflect the rhythm of farm life and the thoughtful approach Sarah brings to everything she creates. With growing areas now well established, there are plans to introduce even more offerings as the farm continues to evolve.

Herd and Harvest Farm is also home to a range of animals, including a much-loved herd of Highland cows that have become a distinctive part of the farm’s identity. Complementing the farm-based products, Sarah offers photography services including family, maternity and pet sessions. With a focus on natural beauty and golden hour light, these sessions capture the warmth and authenticity of life on the land.

As the business entered a new phase of growth, Sarah joined the Digital Solutions Program through Adelaide Business Hub, seeking clarity and confidence in formalising and scaling the venture, particularly in the digital space. Having built the Herd and Harvest Farm website herself using Shopify, Sarah faced a steep learning curve, especially around shipping, fulfilment and platform limitations on lower-tier plans. While navigating conflicting advice from multiple systems proved challenging, it also gave her a strong working knowledge of how these tools operate, knowledge that will support future growth.

Through tailored one-on-one mentoring with Linda from Sapphire Business Consultants, Sarah focused on setting up digital financial systems, integrating MYOB to help automate data between the online store and tax records. She also received support with drafting clear, professional store policies, improving customer trust and compliance, and was connected with a tax consultant to explore the best business structure for her and her husband. Together, these steps have laid important foundations for long-term sustainability.

Reflecting on the experience, Sarah describes the Digital Solutions Program as providing structure, accountability and reassurance during an otherwise overwhelming stage of business growth. Her advice to others considering the program is simple: take the opportunity. Access to funded professional support can make a significant difference, especially when starting out and balancing the many costs of building a business from the ground up.

With its blend of flowers, fragrance, photography and farm life, Herd and Harvest Farm is a beautiful example of how passion, persistence and the right support can come together to create something truly special.
