Captured By Shemieke: Framing Stories Through a Unique Lens
In the vibrant world of visual storytelling, few bring the same passion and artistry as Shemieke Watkins, the creative force behind Captured By Shemieke.
A proud Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri (First Nations people from multiple Adelaide regions) woman, her photography business blends editorial, documentary, and fine art styles to create striking images that capture the essence of her subjects—whether they are people, pets, products, or the natural world.
Growing up, Shemieke spent a lot of time at the beach, fishing, camping and exploring. Her dad taught her how to read animal tracks and find food in the bush, her Grandma taught her how to sing, speak Kaurna language, draw and paint. From soulful portraits to emotive family moments, elegant maternity shoots to captivating business and brand imagery, Shemieke's lens is a gateway into stories that matter. Her style is not only professional but deeply personal, often reflecting the beauty of nature, the charm of animals, and the journey of footprints - recurring elements you’ll find throughout her social media and online portfolio.
“Photography is more than just a job for me,” says Shemieke. “It’s a way to connect, to capture emotion, and to create something timeless.”
Embracing Digital Growth with Adelaide Business Hub
With an eye for visual storytelling, Shemieke knew her next step as a business owner needed to be strategic and digital. After hearing about the Digital Solutions Program through Black Coffee - a national network that supports indigenous Australian businesses through networking and business development among indigenous communities, she took the plunge - motivated by a desire to improve her marketing skills and enhance her online presence.
Before joining the program, Shemieke faced several digital hurdles: her website needed attention, her online visibility required a boost, and she wanted to elevate her client experience from start to finish.
Through a series of tailored mentoring sessions with Steve from Talked about Marketing, workshops and webinars offered by the Adelaide Business Hub, Shemieke began to shift her digital approach. She gained insights into website optimisation, marketing strategies, business automation, and even how to avoid burnout - an often-overlooked challenge in creative industries.
“I’ve learned so much - about marketing, client engagement, automation, and especially about improving my website. It’s a journey I’m still on, but now I have the tools and direction to keep growing.”
Results That Speak for Themselves
The changes have already begun to pay off. By posting more consistently on social media and applying strategic marketing tips, Shemieke has seen a noticeable rise in engagement, website traffic, and most importantly - client bookings.
She’s also begun automating aspects of her workflow, allowing her to better plan ahead and free up time for creativity and connection with her clients.
“It’s made a real difference in how I show up online and interact with my audience. The results speak volumes, and I’m genuinely excited for what’s next.”
Advice to Fellow Creatives and Small Businesses
Shemieke is quick to encourage other small business owners to consider the Digital Solutions Program.
“I highly recommend it! The information is not only valuable but delivered in a fun, interesting, and customised way. Whether you’re just starting or looking to grow, it really makes a difference.”
