Charting a New Course: How Brindabella Sailing is Redefining Adventure Tourism on South Australia’s Coastline

Docked proudly at the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron, Brindabella Sailing is more than just a sailing business, it’s a story of passion, purpose, and the open sea.

Founded by Brigid Dighton and her partner Johnny, Brindabella Sailing is a family-run adventure tourism business that invites guests aboard one of Australia’s most iconic maxi yachts Brindabella, a Sydney to Hobart Line Honours winner and a true legend of the water.

For nearly three years, Brigid and Johnny have been crafting premium, deeply personal sailing experiences that blend the thrill of ocean racing with the charm of local hospitality. Their offerings range from relaxed day sails and seafood feasts to hands-on heritage sails and immersive multi-day expeditions to scenic locations like Kangaroo Island and the Yorke Peninsula.

“Our focus has always been on creating memorable moments,” says Brigid. “It’s about connecting people with nature, history, and each other. All aboard a piece of Australian sailing heritage.”

From Desk Jobs to Deck Life

Both Brigid and Johnny took bold leaps from their previous careers, she from the creative industries and he from corporate insurance, all in pursuit of a dream that would marry their professional skills with their love of the ocean.

When the rare opportunity arose to purchase Brindabella, they knew it was more than a chance to own a yacht, it was a chance to preserve her legacy and share it with others.

“Rather than letting her story fade, we wanted to write a new chapter where everyday people could experience the joy and awe of sailing such a magnificent vessel.”

Each sail is personally hosted by Brigid and Johnny, ensuring a warm, intimate experience for guests. With the support of a small crew, they bring to life a unique mix of adventure, storytelling, and coastal culture.

Support That Sails with You

Running a tourism business is not without its challenges, especially when it’s built on passion and run by a tight-knit team. For Brigid, joining the Women in Business Foundations Program through Adelaide Business Hub was a turning point.

“Wearing so many hats can be overwhelming,” she reflects. “I knew I needed to step outside my comfort zone and get support.”

Through the program, Brigid was mentored by Topknot Management — an experience that she says transformed not just how she communicates her brand, but how she views her role as a business owner.

“Dianne helped me clarify our message, define what makes us unique, and find the confidence to promote ourselves. It was exactly what we needed to grow.”

The result? A professionally crafted marketing deck, strategic pitch emails to top-tier travel publications, and growing media interest that’s already lifting Brindabella Sailing’s visibility in a competitive market.

Clarity, Confidence, and Community

Beyond the marketing wins, Brigid says the program gave her something less tangible but equally powerful: clarity and community.

“It reminded me that we don’t have to have all the answers, and that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. Having that external perspective helped us zoom out and focus on long-term strategy.”

For Businesses at a Crossroads

Brigid’s advice to other women in business? Don’t wait.

“If you’re considering the program, just say yes. Whether you're feeling stuck, unsure, or just need a sounding board, it can be the difference between treading water and charting a new course.”

As for Brindabella Sailing, the horizon is bright. With a growing reputation, an iconic yacht, and a deep passion for what they do, Brigid and Johnny are on a mission to bring the beauty of South Australia’s coast and the legacy of a sailing legend to life for every guest that steps aboard.
